The CAT question paper comprises of three main sections. This structure has evolved over a period of time. CAT from a speed oriented test mutated into a logical and analytical based test. CAT QUESTION PAPER – MORE FACTS !!
The Cat question paper consists of 3 sections i.e. Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning or Data Interpretation. Each section comprises of 20 questions each and the total time to solve the paper is 2 hours and 15 minutes for each student.
There are various ways in which a student can attempt the CAT paper with the most obvious being giving equal time to each of the sections and solving the sections in the preferred order. However, there are certain better techniques too which a student can follow to increase the time utilization.
One such technique is to attempt the paper in two different waves. The first wave of 30 minute each for each section and then 15 minute again for each section again. If one is not attempting to clear the cut off specifically as required by the IIMs, one can opt to give more time to a section in which one is most comfortable, thus increasing the overall percentile score in the CAT paper and increasing the chances of getting into the next tier of institutes after IIMs.
However, one important this to note is that even the second tier institute ask for some basic level of percentile which is not as stringent as the IIMs but still it exists and varies with each college. Like for MDI, the general cut off is around 98-99%ile for its flagship programs, the minimum cut off section wise expected is 80%ile only. That means that a student needs to get at least 80%ile in the three sections and have an overall percentile of 98-99. (This is just a general idea and subjected to change at the discretion of the institute.)
